2011 Celebrity Mascot Games at the Amway Center

by on Jul.30, 2011, under Work

Today I headed down to the Amway Center with ICPlaces sports and entertainment host Carson Ingle to cover the 2011 Celebrity Mascot Games. The event had four teams of six mascots representing different team colors. This 19th annual charity event brought in a crowd of 15,000 parents and kids to support their favorite mascots from across the US and raise money for the New Hope for Kids Charity. Their mission is to bring hope, healing and happiness to children and families suffering from grief, loss or life-threatening illnesses. To date they have granted more than 3,000 wishes to children in Central Florida. Above is a screen grab of a four way joust round with USF’s Rocky the Bull standing center, representing the green team.

Cirque USA

by on Dec.19, 2009, under Work

Tonight I got the opportunity to work with my friend Kevin for a very interesting entertainment company called Cirque USA. They travel the United States performing acts in both small and large venues. Going into it I had no idea of what to expect, but I must say I was impressed.

The show was being put on for a 500 seat dinner awards banquet for Wyndham Resorts. We got there at about 3:00 in the afternoon and started unloading the truck a few minutes after. The owner, a nice guy by the name Niekko, pulled up with their equipment and we started unloading it all into a huge service elevator that took us up to the 2nd floor of the Hilton. The service hall for the Hilton is just short of an airport terminal. Several large events seemed to going on at the same time, waiting in line to use the service elevator took some time, but was necessary. Had we not had them elevators, we would have had to lug 1000 pounds of gear up the stairs, and nobody wants to do that.

We began putting up the speakers and lights while watching around 20 people set tables for 500 guests. People started trickling in around 6 and the show’s dancers came out with colorful costumes and streamers. Kevin and I went down to have dinner while the guests had dinner and their awards banquet.

Three of the performers were getting ready downstairs in the green room, all not talking English or Spanish, so I had no idea what they were talking about, but was curious. Being the new guys I felt it inappropriate to butt into their conversation, so I just kept eating.

Two of the performers were power skippers which looks really cool. The skippers strap on spring loaded stilts specifically designed for their own weight. The dance floor was probably about 50×50 feet and was what they used as their performance stage. It was really incredible how high they got and how they were able to jump over each other somehow avoiding contact. I noticed that once they were on these stilts they had no choice but to keep bouncing in order to keep their balance.

The other performer stacked pieces of wood that looked like 4 ft shelves into a precarious position and then climbed up it. I thought his balancing at the top was the end of that portion of that act but then he balanced a plate upon a stick from his chin and then juggled knives. For they finale they all came out and performed at the same time which looked quite amazing. Once the performers were done Niekko, also the DJ/Host of the event began singing and dancing with the music to get the crowd going on the dance floor.

I will continue to elaborate and edit on this post in the near future, but for now you will just have to wait. I had a very fun time and appreciate the opportunity to work with some fun and interesting people.
